A List of Cages – Robin Roe
This story follows a dual perspective, and the protagonists are Adam and Julian. Adam suffers from ADHD, and in his senior year of high school for his elective, he gets to work as an aide for the school psychologist. When the school psychologist asks him to track down a freshman student who keeps dodging her appointments, Adam finds out it’s his foster brother Julian, whom he hasn’t seen in five years.
Adam is overjoyed to be reunited. At first, Adam thinks Julian is the same person he knew before. The kindhearted soul who acts younger than his age. Sometimes a bit quiet and awkward. But soon Adam realizes that Julian has been keeping secrets about what’s been going on in his house. Secrets that endanger both of their lives when Adam gets involved.
This book deals with a wide variety of important topics. It deals with child abuse and trauma, and overcoming trauma. This book has themes of foster care and depicts experiences people have with ADHD. Initially, this book is about friendship and kindness and how far acts of kindness go and how kindness makes the darkness go away. This is a character-driven story, and the characters are realistic. The writing is engaging, and the story is truly heart-rending and beautiful at the same time. It is an immensely impactful story.
