Notes from Underground is considered one of the first existential novels. Dostoyevsky’s novel focused on human nature, psychology, and introspection. Written in the nineteenth century, this story is still relevant to this day.
In this story the unnamed narrator has a nihilistic view of society. This story is divided into two parts, and the first part is the memoir of the narrator.

The narrator has detached himself from society and has gone underground. He is a spiteful, vengeful, and a vile man. He is obsessive and does irrational things. He attacks the concepts of social utopianism and free will. He argues that society cannot free a man, and in turn a man also cannot free himself.
This is a thought-provoking philosophical novel, and it is regarded as one of the best existential novels of all time. A must-read novel for everyone
