Britt-Marie Was Here – Fredrik Backman
Britt-Marie is a busybody and not an easy person to talk to. This elderly lady cannot stand mess, and people seem to take her helpful suggestions as criticism. She is seen as an annoying character, but she never means ill. Her quirks make people misjudge her. She is a kind soul underneath her passive aggression.
After a long marriage, she leaves her cheating husband and ends up in a small backwater town named Borg. Having to fend for herself, she ends up taking the job of a caretaker for the soon-to-be-demolished recreation center. This story is about community. This story is about Britt-Marie dealing with a completely different situation and her slowly becoming familiar with the people of Borg and becoming friends with the children of the small town. Soccer is a huge deal for the people of Borg, and it is woven through every character’s story here. This story has a diverse cast of characters. This story delves into a lot of the characters’ and Britt-Marie’s past. We get to know why she is the way she is. We follow her journey as she slowly finds a community where she can belong. This is a tale both heartbreaking and wholesome. This is a beautiful story that depicts human emotions and relationships wonderfully.
