Bunny – Mona Awad
Bunny is a dark academia novel, and it is a strange dark satire about cults. The protagonist, Samantha, is enrolled in a small creative writing class. All the other girls in her class call each other bunnies, and Samantha is the outlier in her class. So when she gets invited to the bunnies’s secret meetings, she is evidently excited. But she quickly realises those meetings are weirdly bizarre, like fever dreams. The girls sacrifice bunnies in order to summon someone they want. Samantha slowly realises she has been sucked into an uncanny cult.
This story is quick-paced, and the satirical writing style is intriguing. It explores the dark side of female friendships and criticises cliques and cults. It’s a brilliant novel, and people should read it and try to understand the depth of the message delivered in this book.
