Confessions – Kanae Minato
Confessions is a Japanese psychological revenge horror story. Yuko Moriguchi, a middle school teacher, loses her four-year old daughter in an accident on the school grounds where she teaches. She decides to resign after the tragic death of her child, but before that she has one last lecture to give, one last revelation to make. A revelation that turns everything upside down in her classroom and sets off a dark, maniacal plot for revenge. This story is told from alternating perspectives and in an epistolary way. The writing style is unique as it feels like the whole story is being told through internal monologues. This is a twisted tale with messed-up characters. Every chapter has shocking twists that you will not see coming. This story has a good pacing, and you can finish it in one sitting. This book grabs your attention from the very first page and keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time. As the story progresses, every twist and turn makes the plot eerier and creepier. The complex human psyche plays the most important part in this insanely grim and disturbing story. This book is about despair, tragedy, punishment, and revenge. A must-read book for psychological mystery/thriller and crime fiction lovers.
