I’m the Messenger – Markus Zusak
This story follows Ed Kennedy, a 19-year-old taxi driver. He has no great ambition in his life; he doesn’t really know what to do with it. He lives a pathetic yet peaceful life until one fateful day he ends up stopping a bank robbery and becomes a local hero.
The letters, or more precisely, the ace cards, get delivered to him soon after. There are three addresses in there, and his mission is to touch those people’s lives and deliver a message. Each case and message are different. Some are easy to deliver, and some take everything in Ed just to deliver.
His mission is to help people heal and, when necessary, make people hurt. Ed slowly starts to develop a new meaning for his own life while carrying on as the messenger. What remains is the question, Who is giving these missions and why?
This is a young adult contemporary, and the writing style makes the story heartbreaking and wholesome at the same time. The characters here are intriguing, and the humour in this book adds an extra flavour to this already wonderful story.
It’s definitely a must-read book for everyone.
