The Picture of Dorian Gray is a classic gothic horror set in 19th-century Victorian England.
The main character here, Dorian Gray, decides to sell his soul to remain forever young and beautiful. This book heavily focuses on philosophy, and it’s filled with beautiful prose, as aestheticism is a great part of it. There are two characters here: one named Basil Howard, a famed painter, and another called Lord Henry. Their philosophies of life are polar opposites, as Basil Howard believes in living a life in service of others and Lord Henry believes in living a hedonistic life.
Both of them try to influence Dorian Gray, and seeing a portrait drawn by Basil, Dorian strikes the deal to sell his soul so as to remain forever young and flawless as the painting, but because of this, all the ugly things begin to take place in the portrait.

While Dorian starts living a life of debauchery and sin, the portrait takes a toll, and he remains spotless.
But slowly, Dorian follows a path of crime, and he pays for it.
This story does a wonderful job of social commentary on Victorian England, and through the complex characters, a heavy emphasis is placed on the different philosophy of life. It remains one of the most celebrated classic horrors to this day.
